Launched in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level extension is the only one planned for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. At first, only 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you desired to reserve john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already acquired third-level domains remained running.
